This article is about the Drop 3 chord voicing for the guitar. This is one of the most important voicings and the one used by more Jazz and blues guitarists because of its versatillity and wealth of useable inversions and possible alterations and reductions. Enough said about this voicing, let’s get into its structure and shapes.

Drop 3 chords are formed by lowering the third degree of a closed position. Four part chord voicing through the seventh degree. 1357 voicing.

  • E3

The four inversions of the drop 3 voicings are:

  • 1 7 3 5
  • 3 1 5 7
  • 5 3 7 1
  • 7 5 1 3

Here are the Voicings in all inversions as we travel up the neck of the fingerboard with the bass note on the sixth and on the fifth string:

  • R – root of chord
  • 3 – third of chord
  • 5 – fifth of chord
  • 7 – seventh of chord of chord
  • b3- flatted third of chord
  • b5 -flatted fifth of chord
  • b7- flatted seventh of chord
