Stunt Guitar Part 5 – Hot For Teacher

Stunt Guitar - Thumbnail

This is a classic intro that Ben just wanted to share with us all. The tapping in this intro is pretty demanding and requires a big stretch and some good strength in your little finger. The rapid descending notes require accuracy and legato technique. The only letup here is the main riff -- but that again requires some good timing and palm muting! If you’re not put off thus far -- give it a go!

Lets look at this Van Halen track section by section. First of all, we have the tapping section.

This is a pretty difficult tapping phrase to get right for two reasons. Firstly, the finger stretch is a little uncomfortable and you can forget playing this if your guitar strap sits the guitar low down near your feet. You need to get your hand right around the neck so you can allow the tendons in your hand to move freely. This lets you make the full stretch without damage to your hand. It may sound silly, but you’ll soon feel the strain when your hand position is incorrect. Start of playing this sitting down where you can keep your arm, wrist and fingers loose.

Stunt Guitar 5 - Hot for Teacher

The next problem is the shape of the tapping. A normal tap will be something like t12p8p5 t12p8p5 t12p8p5 for a right hand tap (12th fret) pulled off to a lower note (8th fret) and pulled off with the left hand to the lower note (5th fret) and then repeating. The next step up would be more of a loop where the phrase will contain a hammered note to run back up the neck. For example t12p8p5h5 t12p8p5h5 t12p8p5h5 this would be the same as before, but after pulling the left hand finger off from the 8th fret to the 5th fret, you then tap back on to run back up.

The intro here takes this progression a step further: 0h3h7 t12p7p3p0h3h7-t12p7p3p0h3h7. We start off (after the pick slide) with a hammer on to the 3rd fret with the left hand, then another hammer on to the 7th fret. The tap on the 12th fret gives us the highest note, and then we continue back down as with the second example in the previous paragraph. The right hand tap on the 12th fret then pulls off to the 7th fret and then the left hand finger pulls off to the 3rd fret. Here again, we see almost another note added. Rather than go back up to another t12 or even a hammer on with the left hand to the 7th fret again (back to the second example again) we pull off a third time to an open string. The pattern then repeats with a hammer on to the 3rd fret followed by the 7th fret, the right hand tap on the 12th and so on.

E |-t12p5h8-t12p8p7p5----------------------------------------------------------|

D |-----------------------------------------8t12p8p7p5---------2---------------|
A |----------------------------------------------------8p7p5p0-0---------------|
E |----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

This little descent leads us into a simple break before the main riff itself. Again, we use a descending legato phrase here. This means that we tap the 12th fret again, and pull off the following notes. The plectrum is not used at all for these riffs.

The next section is the lead into the main riff. Nothing too complex here but listen to the song to get the right feel for the bass notes and add a little palm muting to keep them tidy.

We now now switch to a cleaner channel / sound with a little twangy sound really. Listen to the track to setup your amp / effects to get this just right.

And back again to the distorted sound. Again, nothing too difficult here.

We go again to the chorus and then back to the main distorted riff before a lead into the solo. Look back up at the tapping notes to nail this one.

There you have it. A great video by Ben and what a classic track. This song features some pretty hard parts and you will need to give it some time to perfect, but stick at it.
